Restoring the court

Club members gave the clay court new life.

Work on the clay court at Rammelberget started in late April 2024. Club members have put in time and effort to make tennis possible here again.

The restoration was carried out through volunteer work by club members, with support from Kalix municipality.

The archive · since 1954

When Kalix’s first tennis court opened.

Erik Utter was about seven years old when the Rammelberget tennis court opened in 1954. He remembers several hundred people gathering as Kalix gained its first tennis court — built through the dedication of Kalix TK’s volunteers at the time.

  1. 1954

    Opening day

    Several hundred people gathered at Rammelberget for the opening of Kalix’s first tennis court.

  2. 1956

    The practice wall

    Viktor Lindvall of Lindvalls snickeri built a practice wall where players could train by themselves.

  3. Trätong

    The first surface

    The court’s first surface combined concrete and sawdust. The mixture was known as trätong.

The spectators sat on bark-covered wooden benches. Contributors included Lennart and Ola Holmberg of Mo-Nilsson, Sture Forsberg of Poly Foto and Sture Karlsson, who worked at Modo Domsjö.

Erik’s first racket was a Slazenger. His father bought it from Sture Karlin for five kronor.

The restoration in pictures

The photographs follow the work from the worn starting point, through clearing and ground work, to an even court brought back to life.

Two summers of volunteer work.

  1. Late April 2024

    The restoration began. The old court was cleared and work started on bringing the surface back.

  2. Summers 2024–2025

    Work continued several days a week throughout the first two summers. Sometimes three to six people worked together; at other times one person worked alone. The total number of hours is almost impossible to calculate.

  3. Many hours alone

    Kjell Tuvemyr and Rolf Palo both spent many hours tamping and compacting the surface, sometimes working alone.

  4. From late summer 2025

    The first practice sessions could take place, with string serving as temporary lines. Improvements continued throughout summer 2026 with permanent lines and further work on the stumps around the court.

Leaves, branches and uneven patches covered much of the old surface.
The court has clear lines, a full-size net and players back on court.

First stepsOnce the debris was gone, work could begin on levelling the old surface.
ClearingRoots that had grown across the court were dug out and pulled away by hand.
The surfaceThe surface was treated in stages before it could be rolled and levelled.
The linesThe new lines were measured and laid on the newly levelled red surface.
Back in playThe completed court from the opposite corner — a continuous red-clay surface surrounded by forest.
